Dublin Writers Museum
Avid readers and literary fans will immensely enjoy the Dublin Writers Museum. Housed in these walls are priceless and rare manuscripts, books, letters, portraits and personal items of Irelands greatest literary names throughout the last three centuries. Dublin has an astounding literary heritage, and every facet of it is visible in this beautiful museum, located in a restored Georgian mansion on Parnell square.
The museum was established in 1991 by author Maurice Gorham to promote interest in Irish literature. The entire area of the museum and its surrounding buildings is teeming with creative writing vibes. The annex located behind the actual museum is home to a coffee shop and bookstore, and right next door to the museum is the Irish Writer's Center.
Visitors both familiar and unfamiliar with Irish literary works will find this museum fascinating, both for its great collection of rare items as well as the sense of Dublin history provided through the displays. The two main rooms of the museum provide visitors with a look at the history of Irish literature from its beginnings right up to recent times, including various literary movements as well as facts and biographies on individual authors.
In the Exhibition rooms on the first floor, temporary exhibitions can be seen, and the adjoining room contains children's literature. Upstairs is the Gorham Library, which houses the museums many rare books and manuscripts. Moving along to the next room, you will come across the Gallery of Writers, featuring paintings and busts of many famous authors.
The collection in this museum if fabulous. Not only can you find endless portraits and examples of the works of many authors, personal items such as letters and photographs can also be found, providing an intimate look into their lives.
