Book Of Kells Dublin
The Book of Kells is one of the most well-known and gorgeously illustrated manuscripts in the world today. The book was given to Trinity College in the 17th Century, and was put on display in the College's Old Library in 1953, where it remains to this day. There are two volumes on display most of the time, one opened to show a major decorated page, and the other displaying a page of text. A page is turned in each of these books once every month so that viewers can have a constantly-changing view of this amazing work of art.

The book was created sometime around 800 AD by four Irish monks. They carefully squeezed inks from insects and plants in order to create the multicolored inks that make up this work. This four-volume book features the four gospels, as well as prefaces, summaries and canon tables. The Latin text is immaculately printed, and interwoven with various decorations and artwork. Intricate Celtic latticework weaves its way through the pages and borders, and the detail of the designs is astounding.

If you will be visiting Dublin, be sure to make time to view this extraordinary book. The Old Library of Trinity College is open every day of the week, although Sunday hours do vary throughout the year.
